Thegns are also known in the Realms by various other names such as cavelings, wilders, savages, and thogs. Although the term “savage” is insulting to the Thegn, the slur “thog” infuriates them. The Thegn is a cousin race to the Human. They closely resembles humans except Thegns are slightly more muscular, slightly larger, have a dominant brow over the eyes, their ears are very similar to the Hushel, and there are always bald. Though the Thegn are born with hair and it grows normally until it falls out completely in their late teens. Thegns, as a race, do not have the same knack for adaptation and has never flourished as well as humans.
Thegn population has always been extremely low. However, that changed when the Great Fiend, Alormeirth, began experimenting on the Thegn. She originally set out to create an army of loyal servants that would protect her from her numerous enemies and their allies. Alormeirth was a caster of immense power, she claimed the lives of three Avatars and numerous Wardens and Eternals during her existence. The experimentation on the Thegn was brutal and without mercy. However, after countless spells and Rituals, Alormeirth found success. She had increased and expanded her Thegn prisoners’ normal capacities. Upon Alormeirth’s death, the Thegn prisoners escaped and returned to their former tribes or formed their own settlements. The changes made by Alormeirth, were passed down to their offspring. The descendants of those that suffered through those experiments enjoy increased strength, endurance, and a more successful reproductive cycle. Now, the Thegn's influence grows and is spreading throughout the realms.
The Thegn is not as shunned in the Realms as one might expect, at least not openly. The obvious reason is their size and fighting prowess. They're prized as recruits in many armies, sometimes whole tribes of Thegn are hired to be auxiliaries during a military campaign. The Thegn has several chiefdoms throughout Sera known as Fens. The majority of the Thegn population lives in the eastern and northern areas within the great Chiefdoms of Icefen, Bloodfen, Lakefen, and Swordfen.
