THE GATEWAY TO THE BORDERLANDS


Despite the miles of unprotected, uninhabited border, there are only two true entrances into the Borderlands. The most known and traveled is in the north. This is the short route from the Caravan Road to the Village of Phocis. This route sees pilgrims and traders alike brave the Savage Road. A road that’s infamous for its rocky surface and violence. This reputation is well deserved as it passes through an area that’s between the protection of the Loran patrols, and the Borderland Guard. Bandits, criminals, outcasts, and monsters often use this area to live and prey upon the innocent.

 

Approaching the Village of Phocis from the Savage Road is said to be a euphoric experience for many. Its tall wooden walls can easily be seen from a distance and act as a beacon for safety. They bestow hope and calm after traveling on an uncertain and treacherous road. Once arriving in the village, travelers typically only stay a short time before moving south to Acra or other destinations in the Borderlands.

 

THE VILLAGE

 

Those who survive the trip will enter a rustic farming and trade settlement. There’s very little greenery inside the walls of the village. The ground is dominated by pressed brownish grass or simply dirt. Small gardens can be seen near some buildings but few are well-kept. The roads and paths within the village are unpaved.  A small gutter is dug along each side of the road and becomes a muddy, foul-raging creek after heavy rains.

 

The skyline of the village can only be seen within the walls. Most of the structures are one level buildings but #2 and #26 are one and one-half level, and #3, #5, #16, #24, #22, #27 are two levels. The larger buildings are chiefly made of a stone base, with wooden walls, and a wood tile roof. The smaller buildings and houses are of wattle and daub construction.

 

Outside the walls, there are several stone farm houses that appear to manage large tracts of farmland.
